Solar Shed Installation - Comprehensive Plan

Project Overview

This document outlines a complete plan for designing and building a cinderblock shed with electrical infrastructure, including conduit and wiring from two separate locations. The plan is designed to be modified and improved as the project develops.

1. Shed Design Specifications

1.1 Shed Dimensions (Final Design)

  • Size: 8' x 8' (64 sq ft)
  • Wall Height: 8' standard
  • Roof Height (peak): ~9' with 2x6 rafters at 4/12 pitch

1.2 Foundation Requirements

  • Existing concrete slab - already poured

1.3 Cinderblock Construction

  • Wall Height: 8' standard, consider 10' for equipment clearance
  • Block Type: 8" CMU (Concrete Masonry Unit) for structural strength
  • Reinforcement: Vertical rebar in all corners and at 48" OC horizontally
  • Mortar: Type N or S mortar mix for exterior walls
  • Grouting: Fill block cores with concrete where rebar installed

1.4 Roof Design

  • Type: Gable roof with 4/12 pitch
  • Rafters: 2x6 lumber at 24" OC spacing
  • Materials:
    • Metal roofing panels (standing seam or corrugated)
    • Cement board (fiber cement sheeting) for roof underside/soffit
  • Overhang: 12" for weather protection

1.5 Door Specifications

  • Door: 36" wide x 80" tall exterior-rated door with lock
  • Ventilation: Ridge vents or powered exhaust fan

2. Electrical Work Plan

2.1 Overview

Two separate feed locations will supply power to the shed. This provides redundancy and allows for load distribution.

2.2 Conduit Layout

Location 1 Feed (Primary)

  • Conduit Size: 2" EMT or PVC conduit
  • Estimated Length: ~180 ft (half of total 360 ft)
  • Wire Type: 8/3 UF-B or THHN in conduit
  • Breaker Size: 50A recommended for primary feed

Location 2 Feed (Secondary/Backup)

  • Conduit Size: 2" EMT or PVC conduit
  • Estimated Length: ~180 ft (half of total 360 ft)
  • Wire Type: 8/3 UF-B or THHN in conduit
  • Breaker Size: 30A recommended for secondary feed

2.3 Wire Specifications

  • Primary Wire: 8 AWG copper, 3-conductor with ground (8/3)
  • Insulation: THHN/THWN-2 rated for wet locations
  • Estimated Length: 800 ft total (400 ft per location with slack)
  • Voltage Drop Consideration: 8 AWG suitable for ~150 ft at 50A; consider upsizing if distance exceeds

2.4 Shed Electrical Panel

  • Panel Size: 60A main disconnect panel
  • Circuit Breakers:
    • Main breaker: 60A
    • Lighting circuits: 15A or 20A (2 circuits)
    • GFCI outlets: 20A (2 circuits for outdoor areas)
    • Equipment circuits: 30A or 50A as needed
  • Grounding: Ground rod installation required

2.5 Conduit Installation Details

Underground Installation

  • Depth Requirements:
    • PVC conduit under driveway/vehicle area: 18" minimum
    • PVC conduit in yard: 12" minimum
    • EMT conduit (not for burial): Above ground only
  • Bedding: 2-3" sand bed under conduit
  • Warning Tape: Yellow "Caution Buried Electric Line" tape 12" above conduit
  • Pull Strings: Leave pull strings in conduit for future wire additions

Entry Points

  • Weatherproof Conduit Bodies: At both entry locations
  • Sealing: Silicone or expanding foam to prevent water intrusion
  • Conduit Seal: Liquid-tight fittings at equipment connections
